Last month my article, "Food choices should blend with the seasons" discussed how we should choose what we eat to reflect what is grown during various harvests throughout the year. In doing so, we help our bodies prepare for seasonal changes.

Over Labor Day weekend, my family and I headed upstate with a dozen or so other families for an annual camping trip. We've been doing this for so many years we know who will show up first, and who will be the last to pitch their tents before the sun sets.

I look forward to this outing each year because: 1. I enjoy camping. 2. I look forward to planning the menu for the six meals we'll eat there and 3. I leave my watch at home.

A few will stay until the last ember dies out, but for the most part, people eventually head back to their tents and go to sleep. Our bodies were naturally designed to prepare for sleep two to three hours after it gets dark outside and to rise with the sun in the morning.

Unfortunately, we've become a 24/7 society. While I applaud Thomas Edison for inventing the light bulb, because of it we are never truly in the dark anymore. Even when it's time to go to sleep there's always the streetlight shining through the window, the night light in the hallway so we can find our way to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the illuminating numbers from the alarm clock on the bedside table.
