About 200 wood carvers from around the country have gathered at the Knights of Columbus Hall on West Grand to pick up tips from one another and some of the best teachers in the country.

"This is a style I've never done before," he said as he worked on a dragon relief -- which he said was really just a practice piece for a more elaborate sculpture he was planning. Judi Jones of Avon, Ill., said she picked up carving after taking a class from her local parks department. She said she came to take a class from Debbe Edwards, who is known for her realistic animal sculptures.
Jones said Edwards provides students with a "rough out," a piece of wood that is in the rough shape of an animal. The student carves, sculpts, and gives texture to the piece. The first Ozarks Woodcarving Seminar ends at 4:30 p.m. today.
It was organized by Loren Woodard and John Engler. Engler lives in Battlefield but travels around the country teaching.
