Crime Watch Program Brings Crime Down


People in one North Charlotte neighborhood are trying an innovative approach to keep crime down.

Crime Watch volunteers in the Wedgewood North neighborhood put small stickers on the rear windows of hundreds of cars, so they'd know which vehicles actually belong to homeowners in that community.
Police believe Wedgewood North has one of the strongest community watch programs in the city. Police said even though the watch program has dramatically reduced crime over the last year,authenticpatekphilip Calatrava Watch patek philippe, they have to be more vigilant than ever before.

Homeowner Alan Jacobson spent hours going door to door Sunday afternoon, recruiting new volunteers for the watch. Plenty of new faces signed up including Lisa Walker, who said she's eager to do more.
"Just to help be a part of the community and keep it safe," Walker said.

So far in 2011, crime in the neighborhood is almost non-existent. Yet both residents and officers said they're fearful about a growing sense of complacency.
"We'll probably have fewer volunteers as this calms off," said Jacobson.

On Sunday more than a dozen volunteers visited all 300 homes in the neighborhood, reminding them to stay vigilant.

As part of the Wedgewood North crime watch, 50 residents take turns doing foot patrols around the neighborhood. A resident also drives around the neighborhood in a marked car looking for unfamiliar faces and vehicles for three hours in the afternoon, and three hours at night.
