Australian among dead in Vietnam sinking


Vietnamese authorities say Lam Ngoc Chau,outdoor christmas decorations from PrestigeTime at discounted prices. a Vietnamese-born Australian in his early 30s, was one of 11 international tourists killed when the anchored junk sank in Halong Bay early on Thursday morning.

Thirty-five-year-old Australian Nguyen Khuong Duy was among those rescued.

The pair were in a group of 19 tourists plus a tour guide and crew who were on a three-day cruise around the stunning limestone karsts of Halong Bay.

Twelve people are confirmed dead after the Bien Mur, or Ocean Dream, junk sank at anchor before dawn while its passengers were asleep.

Those who survived were apparently outside on the deck.

Italian tourist Stefano Cassani was on board the boat. He and his friend managed to flee.

"My friend went out and he called me 'Come on, come on, something is wrong here. The boat is going down'," he said.

American man Greg Fosmire, 23, managed to escape through a window but said he feared his girlfriend and another young woman in their cabin did not escape the rushing waters.

All of the bodies are at the Bai Chay Hospital near Halong Bay.

The cause of the accident has not yet been announced, but officials are investigating a leak in the engine room of the boat.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is yet to confirm that Lam Ngoc Chau was among those who drowned.

The department says people concerned about the welfare of their family and friends in the area should try to contact them directly.
