Thirty-five years ago Halfway enjoyed the distinction of likely being the smallest town in Texas with its own zoo.

That's thanks to farm equipment manufacturer Durward Lynch, who kept his menagerie at Lynch Manufacturing Co., which was located on the south side of U.S. 70 on the west edge of Halfway.

Lynch, who died in 1994, told the Herald in 1974 that he began collecting animals for his zoo as a hobby around 1970. He even held a zookeeper's license.Sign up for Twitter to follow omegawatches .
