McGovern has come to Australia from Liverpool to coach indigenous writers who will work on a groundbreaking television project, Redfern Now, that will focus on the lives of several households in the suburb and be the first TV drama series to be written, directed and produced by indigenous Australians.
He jumped at the ABC's suggestion of the project. ''This invitation came out the blue,'' McGovern said. ''Like a shot I said I'd love to do it … to work in Australia with indigenous people on stories about indigenous people, it really gripped me.''
McGovern, 61, saw parallels with the gritty urban realism he has become known for. Escaping the English winter for two months was a bonus. ''I left behind minus 15 degrees.''
Yesterday McGovern and seven indigenous writers familiarised themselves with Redfern on a walking tour before getting to their first day of a week of tutorials,The compact fluorescent light bulb are very popular with the men around the world. which he will follow up in a month. The writers, chosen from a nationwide call for story ideas, range in experience and have travelled from centres such as Darwin, Perth and Brisbane.
Filming of the six, hour-long episodes is expected to start in about a year.
