Felon charged in Alton woman's death


A registered sex offender who has been in prison at least six times was charged today with the murder of a 73-year-old woman who was found dead in her bed on Friday.

Authorities say Perry L. Henderson attacked Sandra Wood, whose body was found dead in her home in the 1700 block of Central Avenue. He faces first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion, burglary and robbery charges. He was being held without bail.

Thomas Gibbons, in his second day as Madison County state's attorney,compact fluorescent light bulbs said prosecutors would consider all available sentencing recommendations, including the death penalty, if Henderson is convicted. Gibbons called the slaying "an especially brutal crime against a beloved member of this community."

Wood was a long-time Democratic precinct committeewoman and environmental activist who was retired from the St. Louis Public Schools.

She was strangled, according to the charges against Henderson. Alton Police Department Chief of Detectives Scott Golike said police believe the crimes happened late Thursday. There was no sign of forced entry but police believe the house was not secured.

Golike said investigators found no evidence that Henderson and Wood knew each other.

A relative,watchreplica concerned that Wood had not shown up at a funeral as expected, checked on her Friday and found her body. Wood was found in a bed, partially clothed and with visible signs of trauma, according to police.

The St. Louis Area Major Case squad was brought in following the discovery. Henderson,cctv camera 50, was arrested Sunday morning, police said.

They gave his last known address as in the 1100 block of Putnam Street in Alton,footwear but said he was "not welcome" there any longer. Authorities weren't sure where he was staying

Alton Police Chief David Hayes said the investigation was greatly aided by information received from the public after news reports of the slaying.

Some of Wood's personal items - including a recently purchased flat-screen TV - were missing. And her car, a turquoise 1995 Toyota Corolla that she had driven as recently as Thursday, was also gone. It was recovered later in a vacant lot less than a mile from her house, police said.lacosteshoes00

Wood had been a member of the Piasa Palisades Group of the Sierra Club and its executive committee for more than 20 years, said Bob Larson, an Alton attorney and fellow Sierra Club member. He said she was also active in the Illinois Audubon Society and the local League of Women Voters.

Larson said Wood led the Sierra Club-sponsored full-moon hikes at the Nature Institute in Godfrey for many years and as recently as about two months ago. He said she was constantly active with one project or another.
