You can sell out Mr Clegg

You can sell out Mr Clegg

Before the Election, the Liberal Democrats were committed to abolishing tuition fees. Every Lib Dem MP signed a pledge to vote against any fee increase.

Clegg, who even then was planning to ditch the policy in any coalition negotiation, recorded video messages saying he would resist any rise in fees.

This was foolish. Leaders can bury policies that they dislike by just not campaigning on them. Instead, Clegg has provided his opponents with easy ammunition to use against him.

But once the Liberal Democrats got into power,Welcome to watchreplica Online store,We supply rolex uhren, rolex Replica uhren, discount Rolex uhren,Rolex uhren cheap etc. they realised what the brighter of them had long suspected: this policy was just unaffordable.

Business Secretary Vince Cable and his Tory deputy David Willetts, the Minister of State for Universities, worked up an alternative proposal, based on Lord Browne’s report on higher education funding, which increased fees but at the same time raised the amount you needed to earn before you had to start paying your loans back.

Cable was so happy with the compromise that he presented it to the House of Commons himself.

But as opposition grew and more than a dozen Lib Dem MPs made it clear that they would vote against the proposals, the Lib Dem leadership wobbled. It feared that the party could be rent asunder by tuition fees.

So they started floating the rather barmy idea that all Lib Dems should abstain. The hope was that they could all agree to sit on the fence for the sake of party unity.

This created the absurd prospect of Cable not voting for the legislation he had helped craft.Bewertungen und Erfahrungsberichte zu den seriösesten Onlineshops im Bereich lacosteshoes00. If the leadership had got its way on this, the Lib Dems would have looked like Coalition partners who covered their eyes and ears when there were tough decisions to be taken.

It would have turned Clegg from a hate figure to the student protesters into one of derision. Most damagingly, it would have seemingly confirmed the stereotype of the Lib Dems as a party incapable of taking a tough decision. It would have undone much of the good work carried out since May to show that the Lib Dems are a credible party of government.

But the leadership appears to have been saved from itself by the intransigence of the dozen or so Liberal Democrat backbenchers who are utterly determined to vote against any increase in fees.

Because they won’t back down, Clegg and his ministerial colleagues will be able to vote for the legislation while still saying that they were prepared to compromise for the sake of party unity.
