Mayor take oaths

Family, friends and supporters cheered Monday night after the swearing-in of Mayor Joe Boles, footwear Commissioner Nancy Sikes-Kline and newly elected Commissioner Bill Leary at City Hall.

There was also a bit of sadness as the commissioners and city said goodbye to outgoing Commissioner Don Crichlow, who had declined to run again. Crichlow said he had tried to make decisions based on his feelings for the community,

"It's a wonderful place that I wanted to nurture, protect and preserve," he said. "I never felt I needed to change it. It's awfully nice the way it is right now."

He was presented with a heavy 8-inch section of the trolley track used on the Bridge of Lions from 1927 to 1930.

He said the city wants to sell more of those pieces to support the First America Foundation's work toward St. Augustine's 450th birthday celebration.

Sikes-Kline said Crichlow was "an anchor to me with his wisdom."

Boles joked that "ancient-ness brings with it wisdom, on occasion."

Commissioner Leanna Freeman presented him with a gold clock for his "generous service and vigorous commitment" as a commissioner.

Seventh District Circuit Judge J. Michael Traynor swore in Boles, Sikes-Kline and Leary.

Leary, who suffered a knee injury earlier that day, was in a wheelchair and was due to head for Flagler Hospital immediately after the ceremony.

When called to the front for the swearing in, he wheeled up saying, "I've come this far. ...watchreplica"

He took the oath to protect and defend the constitutions of the U.S. and Florida with his wife, Karen Jurgensen, by his side.

Supporters cheered and applauded long and loud.compact fluorescent light bulbs

Vice Mayor Errol Jones said he's "the last soldier standing" of the three commissioners elected at the same time in 2002 -- George Gardner, Don Crichlow and Jones.

"I'll continue to bear the torch for what we stood for," he said.
