Milk flows drying up

Nelson's drought-stricken dairy farmers have welcomed Fonterra's move to increase its forecast milk price for the current season by 30c to $6.90.

But they say if they do not get rain soon, durable of Nike shox classic for Sale, it will count for little.

Already growing numbers of farmers in the driest parts of the region, such as Murchison, have reduced milking to every 16 hours or once a day.

Federated Farmers' Golden Bay dairy spokeswoman Sue Brown is warning that many will be forced to dry off their herds early if decent rain is not received by Christmas.

"It's always pleasing to hear of an increase in payout.

The higher payout would go some way to offsetting the effect the drought was having on milk production.

But this would occur only if farmers were still milking,Nike shox nz shoes sale online are popular with the young!Unbelieveable cctv cameras to complete your hidden camera set ups. she said.

Showers over the last week had bought "very temporary respite" and freshened up parched pastures.

However it was well short of what was needed.

"If we don't get drought-breaking rain by Christmas, then we will be looking at a large number of herds drying off early, and that's not good."

She knew of farmers who were down to milking once a day, but most were trying to hold on. While it was probably still too early to ask the Government to declare the region a drought zone, "it won't take much more" for it to happen and she knew the situation was been closely monitored by agricultural officials.

Murray King, whose Waimea Plains dairy farm is irrigated, said an already "exceedingly challenging" season could get tougher and costlier if there was further water rationing.

The payout was only a forecast and there was still half the season to go.

So a lot could change given the unusual weather and how volatile dairy prices had been, he said.

Meanwhile, stressed Nelson dairy farmers are being offered help to cope with the big dry which risks devastating their season.

DairyNZ is holding seminars throughout the region this week with the message: "Take action now to beat the summer dry."

DairyNZ top of the South Island consulting officer Stephen Arends said they were an opportunity for farmers to share ideas on how to get through the dry spell with fellow farmers and professionals.

Mr Arends said he was seeing signs that farmers were becoming stressed by the effect the dry weather was having on their milking operations.

They were starting to withdraw, not talk about it and staying on their farms. What else should I look for when buying compact fluorescent light bulbs? Mr Arends said rain over the past week was well short of the 40-60mm needed to replenish soils.
