Bank buys Lake Lawn for $20 million

Anchor Bank in August 2009 filed a foreclosure suit against the resort owners for a $51.9 million loan, according to court documents. In the meantime, the city of Delavan has been scrutinizing charges billed to the resort under the two parties' developers agreement. Per the agreement, the resort is to pay back the city for professional services that are related to the resort. Most are attorney and engineering fees.

In the summers of 2009 and 2010, the city threatened to pull the resort's liquor license unless the resort paid back taxes and cost-recovery bills. In some cases, however, Lake Lawn said it shouldn't have been billed for the invoices in the first place.

Most recently, the city ordered an audit of the cost-recovery system. Financial consultant Baker Tilly provided a spreadsheet that indicated the resort was billed for $123,600 that definitely were cost recoverable and that an additional $295,600 needed more analysis to determine whether the city or the resort is responsible.

The Delavan City Council on Tuesday voted to direct city staff to review the $295,000. The council could take action on the issue at its meeting Tuesday.

All the negative attention the resort has gotten during the foreclosure and during recent negotiations with the city has been difficult for Lake Lawn's owners and management to deal with. But, for now, business is booming, Wassel said.
