The Jags’ middle blocker, Carlis watches the pass from the back row to the setter and tries to anticipate where the ball is going. From a standard set to the left side hitter, fingerprinter a back set, quick set and more, Carlis reads the setter and quickly moves into position for the block in tandem with one of her teammates.

“It’s the quickness and lateral movement across the net,” said Carlis, who’s one of the leading Metro blockers.cctv camera “It’s the main thing so the defense knows where to set up. When you’re blocking, you’re not necessarily trying to block the ball, american lighting but to take away a spot on the court so the defense can get to the ball.”

Carlis and the Jags started the week knowing the season could end during Tuesday’s Class 6A, Area 12 tournament at Vestavia Hills.

Fourth-seeded Spain Park takes on the top seed and sixth-ranked Vestavia. The winner is assured a spot in Saturday’s regional tournament, but the season is over for the loser.

Spain Park coach Paula Dill has spent the last few weeks trying to make sure her team understands the urgency.

“We want the kids to know they have to play, be mature and be selfless,” Dill said. “With the focus level we were at, we knew we wouldn’t be able to do that.

I don’t mean we have bad attitudes, but we haven’t been real focused on how soon the season is coming to an end. I need them to step up and play the way they can.”

Seniors Carlis and Katie Best are key for the Jags.wholesalersblogs

Best leads the team in kills with 348 and digs with 313 while Carlis leads in blocks with 130 and is third in kills with 166.

Sophomore McKenna McLain is the setter while senior Sydney Fritz is second on the team in kills and digs. Other front row contributors include sophomore Kylie Beaubien and junior Mary Grace Drum.

Carlis and Best both started as freshmen and have been pivotal since.

“As far as maturity levels they have come leaps and bounds since they were freshman,” Dill said. “Katie is a major competitor, and Kendal is, too, but they’re just two different personalities. Katie is more aggressive with her competiveness and Kendal is more of a conservative competitor.”

The 6-foot Carlis is a key blocker because of her ability and knowledge of the sport. The defense behind her is set according to the offensive tendencies of a specific team.

If a team primarily attacks down the lines, Spain Park will counter with a perimeter defense where the block is set up to protect the lines. The middle back row player concentrates on handling attacks in the middle of the court to take away the open spaces.
