The Glee effect a small part of local students

TJ Gray, a senior at Union High School in La Porte City, is on both the football team and his school's show choir.

But lest you think he's like Finn Hudson, a character on the Fox television series "Glee," he assured that he's not. Unlike Finn, juicycouturesuit lovekillsslowly wholesalersblog. Gray said he doesn't deal with any animosity between sports and music.

"Our glee club is different --- it's not seen as a nerdy thing at our school," Gray said.

Students and show choir directors alike say the program is simply a validation of what they've been doing successfully for decades.

"I think it's always been one of those things that's been established here,Trailer wheel hubs play an essential role in towing anything. The Warriors,mp4sales, who are four points adrift of second place with two games remaining." Union's show choir director Tim Mitchell said. "It's kind of like 'Glee' is catching up to what's been happening in Iowa all these years."

Like other ways pop culture mirrors reality, "Glee" does provide inspiration in their song choices --- Mitchell's group performed the show's version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" for graduation last spring, and the concert choir at Waterloo West High School did the "Glee" version of "Lean On Me" a couple of times this fall.

But overall, "Glee" is like any other show --- watched, or not watched, for the entertainment value and the parallels viewers draw with their own life experiences.

"It hasn't really consciously affected how we do stuff. It's fun to watch and talk about," Union senior Erica Barz said.

Kristin Ambrose, american lighting is currently recognized as one of the nation's leading lighting retrofit contractors. a Waterloo West High junior in the Wahawk Show Choir, watches the show "religiously." Nevertheless, it's not a reflection of what her experience this year has been.

"I would say that it's very different: You're working your butt off, you're always singing, access lighting at Lighting by Lux. Authorized Dealer. dancing, doing everything you can to better your show and have success for the competition season," she said.

Junior Michael Stamp, with the Wahawk Show Choir for three years, said "Glee" and WSC go hand-in-hand because they're about the same activity. But the show isn't the reality of hours-long rehearsals of the same song-and-dance numbers --- and other students don't get that.

"People say 'Glee' is stupid and (therefore) show choir is stupid," Stamp said. "Well, you haven't been in show choir and you watched 'Glee' for 30 seconds. It's really hard to explain the difference."

Wahawk Show Choir director Shannon McGuire hadn't seen the Fox show until someone bought her the first season on DVD. She has shown episodes during choir rehearsals for inspiration, but said her students also get inspired by other musical shows like "America's Got Talent" and "American Idol."

McGuire has 25 students in her show choir this year, down a bit from last year.

"Some students say, 'I don't get into 'Glee,' but I love being in show choir; some kids have never seen 'Glee,'" she said. "I like it. I enjoy hearing what my kids have to say about the show."

Dan Laaveg would love those kind of numbers at Waterloo East High School --- he's got three female and two male participants in show choir so far. But he's also got high hopes.

"I'd like to get to 50 (participants) --- that's a long way off," he said.

He's not counting on the popularity of "Glee" to get kids interested in show choir at East, but he's definitely employing tactics the show espouses in encouraging participation.
