Mahomet seeks to follow U High


A Corn Belt Conference team is a threat to win the Class 2A State Tournament beginning Friday at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State.roseabc started a new discussion called Payments.

University High School’s record run of seven straight state tourney titles ended at Monday’s sectional when the Pioneers finished fourth. Mahomet-Seymour,manufacturing site of Apex universal joints. which has beaten U High the last two years in the Corn Belt Tournament, is among the contenders to replace the Pioneers as state champs.

“If we play to where we’re capable of we’ll be right in the mix,” said Mahomet-Seymour coach Nathan Mills.

Mahomet-Seymour has five of six golfers returning from last year’s squad which finished a disappointing eighth at the state. Senior Seth Trolia led the way, tying for 22nd. Other Bulldog golfers returning are seniors Adam Guth, Andrew Lawson and Grant Dukeman along with junior Garrett Cox. The state tourney newcomer is senior Jason Troyer.

“It left a bitter taste in our mouth. It’s nice to get back,” said Mills. “I’m sure nerves played a little part in that. We didn’t play as well as we would have liked. We’ve been there before so it’s another tournament now.”

Today’s first round and Saturday’s finale begin at 8:30 a.m.

Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin finished third in last year’s state photo finish, a stroke behind co-champs U High and Wheaton St. Francis, and could be the favorite. Sacred Heart-Griffin returns its top three placers from that squad, including Josh Edison. Peoria Notre Dame tied Mahomet-Seymour for the Dunlap Sectional crown. Other sectional champions are Freeport and Lemont, which was fifth in last year’s state.
