Tale of mysticism and suspense leads to new Eden

In the beginning, there is murder. “Adam & Eve,’’ the new novel by Sena Jeter Naslund, best-selling author of “Ahab’s Wife’’ and “Abundance,,Buy Breitling Watches, Shopping for high quality and lower price Breitling Watches.’’ opens in the year 2020. Psychologist Lucy Bergmann watches in horror as a grand piano being hoisted up the side of a building suddenly breaks its shackles and plummets several stories to the sidewalk, crushing her brilliant husband, Thom, “the best brain in astrophysics in the world.’’

While Lucy first assumes the death of her beloved mate was surely some kind of freak accident, others suggest Thom was murdered, perhaps for the information stored on the memory stick he gave Lucy just hours before he died. On the flash drive is irrefutable proof of extraterrestrial life, and as Lucy goes about the process of grief and recovery, she wears the stick around her neck like a precious talisman, unsure of whether, and to whom, to divulge its extraordinary contents.

But before we have time to really settle into this mystery, tangential threads begin to tear at the fabric of the story, pulling it in different directions. Lucy is recruited (rather incredulously) to transport sensitive secret documents positing another vision of creation and a different perspective on the Book of Genesis. Once translated, the ancient codex would present a compelling challenge to the elemental doctrines of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, wreaking havoc on the underpinnings of these three major world religions. As a courier, Lucy is a target for fundamentalists and zealots.

When Lucy’s plane crashes (not surprisingly) in a verdant, isolated region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, she is rescued by a young American soldier named Adam. Adam was brutally tortured by Arab militants and left to die on the road, leaving him fragile of mind and with a tenuous grip on reality. Many people are obsessed with Replica Breitling watches, some of them even spear up to their last cent to get them. He tells Lucy, “I was captured, and beaten and left half dead. I found myself in a place, a garden, that seemed like Eden. Like the first day of creation. Like the beginning of my life.’’ As Adam nurses Lucy back to health, he comes to believe she is his Eve. Lucy, at first resistant,,Welcome to buychinashoes.com,We Supply Cartier watch. comes gradually to appreciate Adam’s unique vision of the world.

The chronicle of how Adam and Lucy come together, creating their own intimate little universe “in an oasis of peace . . . totally surrounded by the most vicious warfare the world has ever seen,’’ unfolds as a rather charming parable. Lucy muses, “This was Eden, and we were all caught in its web of non-time. History was not just insignificant but irrelevant. What mattered was here and now.’’ Naslund beautifully evokes the disconnect a thoroughly modern woman might feel after being thrust into a rather fantastical existence, her thrill of being alive tempered by her isolation and dependence on a madman. Yet the allure of Lucy’s new life with the calm, complacent Adam proves seductive. “The fact of my former, complicated and civilized life contradicted this fantasy too flatly. It is necessary for you to choose the REPLICA BREITLING watches that are most suitable to your personality. It would be no kind, caring act to crack open this world with the stone of memory. . . . Wonder seemed the best state of mind.’’
