Area blind association receives first grant

Typically, the Ohio Valley Blind Association raises money to aid the visually impaired in Southern Indiana and Louisville by holding candle sales. Until Saturday, the group had never received a grant in its near 25-year existence to purchase needed items such as talking watches and eye glasses.

The struggles of the visually impaired hit home for Vectren Energy employee Deric Mattingly. After reading about the local organization in a recent Evening News and Tribune article, Mattingly approached the Vectren Foundation seeking an award that would help the group’s cause.

Following the Ohio Valley Blind Association’s annual Thanksgiving dinner Saturday, Mattingly presented the organization with a check for $2,500. He said his family was touched by the group’s efforts, accent lighting is lighting that emphasizes an area of or an object in a room. as they have a son that’s visually impaired.

“This really means something to us,What Dubai is facing currently is very similar to what a lot of other countries have faced, deck lights.” he said.

Hopefully, Vectren’s donation will lead to other grants for the organization, said Leonard Logsdon, vice president of the Ohio Valley Blind Association.

“It’s a very, very special thing,” said Logsdon of the Vectren award.Manufacturer of backyard ceiling fluorescent light for parties and events. “We have to get our first grant in order to get others.”

Beyond aiding low-income, visually impaired residents, the group aims to provide quality-of-life opportunities for its members. The organization has a goal of raising enough money to purchase a handicap-accessible van so members can take trips to state parks and other places of interest.

Mattingly said he kept his fingers crossed while waiting on word that the Vectren Foundation approved the grant application.

“The foundation is here to help people like this, and you can’t find a better organization than this,” he said.
