U.S. Justice Department seizes 82 Web sites

The U.S. Justice Department launched a Cyber Monday strike against Web sites that sell counterfeit goods ranging from DVDs to Cleveland sports gear.

The department went to federal courts across the country to shut down 82 sites that sold everything from phony Burberry scarves to fake UGGs.bagswallets

Five suits were filed in U.S. District Court in Cleveland after members of an Immigration Customs Enforcement task force made multiple purchases from online stores operating from China, including topabuy.com, usaburberryscarf.com, oebags.com, pbosports.com and jerseychina.lacosteshoes521com.

Most offered designer or sporting goods on the cheap.

Just how fake are those fakes?

PBOSports.compact fluorescent light bulbcom sold Timberland boots that featured President Obama's picture on the ankle. Justice Department spokesman Mike Tobin said, "Timberland said they don't make these."

As fast as the Justice Department slapped warnings on the sites that the domains had been seized, new sites appeared selling similar goods.paper hand towels

Several agents buying products as part of the nationwide sting were told items they sought – including a 1948 replica jersey for Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau – were sold out, the Washington Post reported. The same site, though, apparently had plenty of fake Josh Cribbs jerseys still in stock.cctv camera

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the court-ordered seizures disrupted the sale of thousands of illicit products and cut off profits for the counterfeiters.

Sales of counterfeit products "threaten economic opportunities and financial stability. They destroy jobs. They suppress innovation," Holder said in prepared remarks.

He urged consumers to steer clear of hallmark signs of counterfeit goods, like bargain prices that are clearly too good to be true.

Web sites selling fakes frequently lack much information about the physical location of the retailer.

Phony goods may be flimsier than the real items, and may have poor construction or lower-grade materials.
