A moment into the episode

A moment into the episode, Eli tries to be as magnanimous as Nucky by granting one of his ward heelers a day off, so that he can be with his daughter when she is fitted for leg braces. Eli says, “Take the day. Be with your girl.” He is seated too low in the chair when he makes this statement, so that the desk top is almost at the level of his neck—a nice portrait of a pretender. When the ward heeler asks, “You sure?”, Eli gets pissy: “I just said it, didn’t I? Why would I not be sure?”, and the kindness of his gesture is ruined.

Later we see Eli and his cohorts seated around a projector, watching a porn movie—silent nun-porn,computerpartsforsale- Somerset recover from early. no less—and talking witlessly about what’s on screen. Nucky’s habit of surrounding himself and the politicos he is trying to impress with a harem of half-clad showgirls seems classier and more human by comparison.

Nuck’s on-the-way-out mistress, Lucy Danziger (Paz de la Huerta), made just one appearance this episode, drunk or stoned and demanding credit at the lingerie shop. She spills out into the Ritz lobby, where Nucky’s new favorite, the widow Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), is having tea with a fellow concubine. There ensues a spat between these two rivals for Nucky’s heart.american lighting is currently recognized as one of the nation's leading lighting retrofit contractors. It ends with Margaret asserting her new status with a slap to Lucy’s face. This catfight scene was the only part of the show that seemed forced to me. The Margaret Schroeder character has been all over the place. She’s so inconsistent that the way she reacts to things can seem slightly off. Later in the show, however, the character comes into sharp focus, which I’ll get to in a minute.

The big event this week was the shooting of Eli at a Nucky-supplied casino. Hearing the news in Chicago, by telephone, Nucky realizes he is under attack. It’s a sign that his old, mild way of doing underground business must toughen up, given the new reality of Prohibition.

Before this climax we caught a glimpse of the creepy Inspector Van Alden (Mike Shannon), going through a drawer full of envelopes he has intercepted—envelopes full of cash sent from Chicago by Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) to his Atlantic City common-law wife, Angela (Aleksa Palladino). And then we moved to New York to catch sight of a meeting between Nuck’s enemy, Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg),access lighting at Lighting by Lux. Jimmy’s hit man, the sniper specialist with the half-mask, Richard Harrow (played by a riveting Jack Huston), steps in, apparently ready to join the team. “Someone’s got it in their heads that I’m weak,” Nucky says.
